Welcome to the 2021/2022 School Year!

Ed Services Updates

iReady

The first diagnostic testing window will be from August 9th to September 10th. Diagnostic 1 is optional for K/1 teachers to administer, but required for 2-8 grade teachers. Please work with your PLC and administrator to decide on a time to administer your diagnostic. Once students finish Diagnostic 1, students will have access to personalized instruction. As a reminder, if the students do not take the diagnostic, students will not have access to the personalized instruction. The iReady dates and windows will be available in the assessment calendar which can be found on the “21/22 Assessment Calendar” tab at the top of the Educator Blog. For steps on how to administer the diagnostic, please review the following document. Assigning the iReady Diagnostic

Ed Tech Updates

Classwize

Classwize is our new screen monitoring tool.  This is an optional tool for teachers to use.  All classes are shared through Clever so students do not enroll in classes, they will be there when their information when the school year starts. With this tool you can push out specific websites, focus students on one website, pause the internet, send students messages and monitor student internet use. Please see the guide below that includes step-by-step instructions and instructional videos.

Classwize Starting Guide

There is also optional PD on August 4th at 1:30pm and August 23rd at 3:15pm.

The link for August 4th is below and we will include the link for August 23rd in the blog as we get closer.

Otus Updates

A reminder that any Lesson or Assessment you assign before a student is in your class you will need to assign to that student once they are enrolled. A reminder that no matter the current or past classroom assignment the news feed captures what was assigned at the time the student was in enrolled class. Think of the notification feed as sending emails or text messages - once it's been sent, you aren't able to delete it from the receiver.

Otus Reminders and Updates

RCSD Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship is something that we teach all students K-8 in RCSD. A reminder that the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires that all students K-12 receive Internet Safety lessons to learn about appropriate online behavior each year and we use Common Sense Media for our safety lessons.

The lesson topics are the same as last year.  The format of the website has changed a little but you can still easily find Lesson Slides, instructions, and handouts all in one place. Below is a link with the lessons for each grade level.

Common Sense Media Digital Citizenship Lessons

EduTyping

All students in 1st through 6th grade have access to Edutyping.  Please see the links below with more details on how to log in as a student or teacher.

EduTyping- Student Log In

Common Sense Media Account

You can no longer log into Common Sense Media through Clever.  Clever is designed to sign up entire class rosters of students on classroom learning sites, but students never need to create accounts on Common Sense Education. Accounts on Common Sense Education are for teachers only. To create an account go to https://www.commonsense.org/education/ and click Join in the top right corner. Staff can either create a user name and password or login with Google.

Screencastify

A reminder we have Screencastify for all students and teachers in RCSD. This past year Screencastify added a blur tool in Editor that allows teachers to blur out any student information. You can find additional videos and tools on the RCSD Learning Site Screencastify Page

or on the Screencastify website Resource Hub.

Technology Updates

Staff Password Update

During a recent security review we identified several staff that had not updated their password in the past 20 months, or it is not compliant with District Policy. If you are having difficulty accessing your Gmail, please go to reset.rcsdk8.org and follow the Change Password prompts. Your username will be your District email without the @rcsdk8.org (for example, the username for lassem@rcsdk8.org would be lassem).

Once your password has been changed, you can will use your new password to login to your device and all services (i.e. District Wi-Fi, PowerSchool, Clever, Gmail, etc). If you have any issues, please submit a SchoolDude ticket and we'll be happy to assist.

Student Password Update

Technology Services will begin updating student passwords on or before August 5, 2021.

Students will log in to all learning applications and their Google account using either their Clever badge or the following credentials:

Username: StudentID@rcsdkids.us (example: 267555@rcsdkids.us)

Password:

  • Preschool through 2nd Grade: MMDD, please use the Month and Date of the student’s date of birth (example: 0824 if your student was born on August 24th).

  • 3rd through 8th = MM/DD/YY, will be prompted to change password upon initial login.

Please note, students enrolled in 3rd - 8th grade will be prompted to change the password upon initial login. Password Criteria: 8-characters in length, and contain both numbers and letters.

Zoom Update

As we transition back to in-person instruction, the District will be converting Zoom licensed accounts to “Basic” Educational

Accounts on or before August 1, 2021. As an educator, you will continue to have access to:

Host up to 100 participants for up to 40-minutes

  • Unlimited one-to-one meetings with no time limit

  • Private and Group Chat

In the event of a quarantine, Technology Services will work closely with Personnel Services to temporarily provide a licensed account for any certificated staff to remove the 40-minute time limit.

Apple School Manager

In the Fall 2020, Apple started prompting users with Volume Purchasing Program (VPP) accounts to enable two-factor authentication, which was being done at the site level anonymously. In the Spring 2021, Apple required the District to migrate our VPP accounts to Apple School Manager (ASM) accounts, and recommended we utilize Microsoft Azure federation to bypass two-factor authentication.

What this means for you..

  • To prevent two-factor authentication from being turned back on, please do not “Sign-out” of App Store accounts on any site devices (i.e. laptop, iPad, or Apple TV) as that will remove the activation lock and prevent Technology Services from being able to quickly assign the device to the site Apple School Manager account.

  • Until the migration process is complete, Apple ID logins and passwords will not be shared with anyone at the site… once the process is complete, Apple IDs will no longer be needed.

  • Future App purchases will be managed through Site Apple School Manager account and Filewave (our new MDM). Please submit a SchoolDude ticket with device information for the apps to be downloaded to the device.

Spike in Email Phishing

The District is starting to see a spike in phishing and spam emails, where the sender is either impersonating District staff or someone outside the District. Just a reminder, if you receive an email that looks suspicious, please follow the below steps:

  • DON'T click any links, open any files, or provide personal information (including passwords)

  • DON'T forward the message or reply to the sender.

  • VERIFY the email address matches the sender.

You receive a suspicious email from your Principal or a District admin asking you for a favor because they are in a meeting, what do you do? If the message looks suspicious, and you know the sender, call the sender to verify the message is genuine before clicking any links, opening any files, or providing information.

Clever Update - Teacher Logins

While we update Clever with rosters for the upcoming school year, we had to make some temporary changes to logins.
Until further notice, students cannot log into Clever. This is to prevent access to their schedules for the upcoming school year.
  • Teachers/Staff can log in with their email address and temporary password RCSDchamps21!

Classroom Technology: Chromebooks

In alignment with the District’s Sustainable Student Digital Learning Refresh plan, the Information Systems Technician team have deployed Chromebooks to each classrooms or site based on the District standard (as shared below):
  • 2-to-1 in TK through 1st grade for on-campus use only.

  • 1-to-1 in 2nd through 5th grade for on-campus use only.

  • 1-to-1 in 6th through 8th grade that will be taken to and from school.

    • 6th grade Chromebooks will arrive on or before August 27th.

Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Chromebook Expectation:

Site Offices will exchange Chromebooks due to lost, stolen, or damage through an on-hand surplus.
  • All damaged Chromebooks must be sent to technology for assessment and repair immediately. Please work with site clerical to report any lost, stolen, or damage and exchange student devices.
