Message from Jamey Schrey

Today I know that there is sadness sitting in each of our hearts. The tragedy at Robb Elementary School, with 21 lives lost in Uvalde, Texas, is horrifying.

.

This heartbreaking news made me immediately think about the current book I am reading, Speak by Tunde Oyeneyin. Her book title is the acronym for:

Surrender
Power
Empathy
Authenticity
Knowledge

In tragedy, Tunde shares, we can feel hopeless and hopeful in the same breath. While I feel hopeless as I listen to the news about the little town of Uvalde and the lives lost, I arrived home last night from a student recognition ceremony inspired. The ceremony was where students were celebrated for being leaders, learners, newly reclassified, community activists, biliterate citizens, athletes, etc. I watched children from multiple races, ethnicities, and gender identities celebrate their peers with respect and admiration. These children will be one of the next generations of adults, and each student that stood up tonight was an icon of hope. The hope comes from the fact that adults, exceptional educators, have given their energies, love, lesson plans, lectures, and lots of other efforts, to develop our future. For every child that stood up last night, no fewer than 25+ educators had invested in that child.

This year has been tough…behaviors, stressful meetings, COVID protocols, etc. I would go as far as to say that it was more challenging than the 2020–2021 school year. Thank you for staying the course, surrendering to what you could not control, and showing up for RCSD children…for my daughters.

As we leave the year, let us each lift another person up with a fist bump, a smile, or a note, because humanity is built on our connectedness.

During a recent keynote, Dan Levy spoke about a single moment from childhood that changed the trajectory of his life. When he turned in a book report that didn't follow the rules of the assignment – instead of writing the report as a short story told from four different narrative perspectives – his teacher read his assignment aloud to the class as an example of how everyone should be thinking outside the box.

"It shows how often we can look beyond the expected to see the amazing," said Dan, adding that he'd carried that single moment with him to the set of "Schitt's Creek," allowing everyone to voice their opinions about the script and characters before filming.

"As individuals, at times, we need to bring our excellence in – and, at times, we need to use that excellence to bless the work of others," said Dan.

Thank you for your work this year. Each one of you is a hero.

Please do not forget to come out today, Wednesday 3:30pm at Kaseberg, and honor our retiring heroes and wish them the best of luck on their continuing life journey.

I wish you all rest, fun, and special memories over the summer.

Ed Services Update

Second Step Kit Collection
As we embarked on this school year, some staff continued to use the physical Second Step Kits while others transitioned completely digital. In order to maintain the most up to date curriculum and coherence across the district, starting the 2022-23 school year, the K-5 Second Step curriculum should all be accessed via the online version. The online and physical programs are different, therefore we are asking all K-5 Gen Ed physical kits get collected (you may keep the classroom posters if you would like).

Physical Kits
  • K-5 Gen Ed classrooms - submit your kit to your site LMS. Site LMS should store kit per grade level to be used in intervention small groups or reteaching and send the remaining to the media center.
  • TK/Preschool classrooms - keep the physical kit as the program is not online.
  • ASD/FSP/SDC - you may choose whether they would like to keep or return the physical kits.
As I know this is a late notice . . . collection and returning kits can happen through August. Please work with your LMS to turn your kits in for collection.

EduTyping
If you receive a notice asking about EduTyping renewal please ignore it. As a reminder, we are purchasing a 3-year license for grades 1-6.
