#Maximizelearning
Oftentimes a year in advance, airlines put out times that planes will take off and land so travelers can plan their perfect vacation. And then BAAM! There are travelers stuck in New York with snow, a plane is grounded for engine trouble, and a connecting flight is missed. Just like every year educators across the country open the new year with the goal of teaching students, developing lesson plans and projects, in hopes of supporting students in making at least one year of growth. And then BAAM! Educators have to teach during a pandemic.
No matter the circumstance, our district’s mission statement still is our guidepost:
The mission of the Roseville City School District is to maximize learning for each and every one of our students.
Yes, we are trying to maximize the learning for all our students, but it probably won’t be a full year of growth. Why? Because we are in a pandemic. Each of you are in classrooms and online with students and are exhausting yourselves to engage students with masks, Zoom, quarantines, no RTI, etc. Thank YOU!
I know that I can’t wait for a day when the mission statement might be:
The mission of the Roseville City School District is to maximize learning for each and every one of our students when they can be with us every day, in-person, without COVID-19 worries and impacts.
However, we do not have the option of waiting until the pandemic is over. Similarly, planes fly all over the world through storms, plane mishaps, etc. all with modifications, changes, disappoints, and successes.
Here is what I have adapted our mission statement to be during the pandemic:
The mission of the Roseville City School District is to:
Maximize learning for each and every one of our students
Provide stability for students
Provide a safe space for students
Provide play and relationship experiences for students
Provide structure and distraction for students during the stressful times of the pandemic.
Wow! Yes, each of you is part of a district that is providing wonderful experiences for students during this worldwide crisis. What you are providing for children is more than one year of growth is worth...it is priceless. And, there is no formal assessment that can show the accurate data. However, from this mom, I can share with you anecdotally that educators are meeting the pandemic mission statement for my own children.
I feel so lucky that my children are learning from quality educators and growing. I am more thankful that they engage with people, educators, and friends, that they smile, that they are safe, they are seen, and that they are learning. We have to value the everyday moments more than total growth. It does not mean each of us is not trying to support the growth, that we are not pushing children to learn, but we are also aware of their fragility and of our own. As I have shared before, we are all a #workinprogress
And still, I can’t wait! I can’t wait to pull off our masks, get in carpools, drop off students for a full day, with educators who are not having to deal with the pandemic’s obstacles.
I applaud you. I celebrate you. I hope you each enjoy the upcoming long weekend.
Fondly,
Jamey
Report Cards
A reminder there was a lot more information in last week's Educator Blog about report cards, but we wanted to highlight a few things again:
A reminder when you assign the rubrics to please put the date of 2/19/21
Participation Scores for science, social studies, and PE are now comments, not rubrics (this is different from the 1st Trimester)
You do not need to enter the comment 3 times just 1 time. You can add it in your "homeroom" class or under where you put comments for ABC Standard comments. Do not put the comment in Science, Social Studies, and PE, just put the comment once. Please add one of the following comments:
Your child participated in Science and Social Studies. Physical Education lessons were provided for students to complete at home.
Or
Your child did NOT participate in Science and Social Studies. Physical Education lessons were provided for students to complete at home.
Unfortunately, there is no way to mass comment to all students, so hopefully, when you are writing comments to students you can add this comment at that time.
Rubric Report Card Guide- This guide shows you how to enter comments for the report card, and how to assign the report card rubrics and grade the rubrics.
RCSD Report Card Comment Bank- Optional Comment Bank teachers can use to copy and paste comments into Otus.
If you have questions please reach out to the following people
Megan Spears- OR, Spanger, Fiddy, Junction, Thomas Jefferson, Champions K-2
Brandon Blom- Sargeant, Diamond Creek, Crestmont, TK, Champions 3-5
Jennie Ruvalcalba- Kaseberg, Woodbridge, Blue Oaks, Stoneridge
Julie Murdaugh- Cirby, Brown, Riego Creek, Gates
Because grades are entered after the Trimester ends, students that either change classes at the Trimester or are in Wheel Classes will see both 2nd and 3rd Trimester classes in Otus. The reason why is that is the only way teachers can still have access to enter grades that first week of 3rd Trimester.
Additional Information
When/if teachers become quarantined over a weekend or on a holiday they can return back to school sites after hours to gather curriculum and other needed supplies if they choose. If packets of materials are needed for students, teachers have the ability to send the packet(s) to the principal/secretary to be copied and distributed.
K-1 Elementary Teachers: Math
In the past, we have asked elementary K-1 teachers to report math foundational skills in a Google Form at the end of Trimester 2 and 3. These Google Forms will not be required during the 20-21 school year. We will be getting teacher feedback about past procedures and implementing a new process at the start of the 21-22 school year.
iReady Scores in Otus
We will be updating the most recent iReady diagnostic scores into Otus. They should be available to view for students, parents, and teachers by the middle of next week.
