Message from Jamey Schrey

Well, you started with your heads held high, ready to greet your new students, and try to make the best of distance learning. As you end the first trimester, you should all still have your heads held high and stand prouder for what you have done for children. You have learned, planned, laughed, cried, failed some, and succeeded many times. And you have brought your heart and souls online each day to allow children to be seen and heard from their rooms throughout Roseville.

And yes, darn it! You should be tired. Just when you think you may get to exhale, things are changing again in trimester two. And where will we be in three months? Heck, trust me, I wish I knew. I long for the days of complaining about writing a state-mandated plan or attending a webinar to learn about a newly adopted state budget. While there are days that this “new” normal does seem familiar - I find that something little, a call, a song, an email,  will bring some brimming tears and cause me almost to be paralyzed for some time.

We are all tired, unsure, and ready for the “yellow” tier. But, we are not there, and we must find a way, together, to rally for November 4th and beyond.

I recently read the book Burnout: The Secret To Unlocking The Stress Cycle. I found the book very helpful in analyzing my own stress vs. stressors. The book gave me some strategies that I hope will assist me in continuing to be both mentally and physically healthy. And, one of my favorite people, Brene Brown just did a podcast with the author. I hope you enjoy the podcast and find some assistance in managing your stress. Here is the link:

The roles in Educational Services are continuing to change as we continue to support the implementation of different learning models and have one less coordinator on staff this year.

The Coordinators will support the named areas for now:

  • Jennie Ruvalcaba-English Learners, Middle School ELA

  • Megan Spears-Mathematics, Science,

  • Julie Murdaugh-Elementary ELA, PBIS, Second Step, SSP

PCOE will have a Spelling Bee in 2021. However, they are looking at alternative options given the current health and safety COVID-19 restrictions while still maintaining the program’s integrity for our students. In general, you can earmark January 2021 to implement the qualifying grade-level tests in your districts and March 2021 for the County Oral Competition. PCOE will have more information and details for you in mid-November.

Tri 1 Grade Information

A reminder you can check the blog post from 10/1 for more details. A few important highlights:

Teachers will need to have the report cards completed by the end of the day on October 27th to give clerical time to get the reports ready to send home.

Please see the information below regarding how printing report cards will work.  The District will be creating the reports and emailing them home for the 1st Trimester on October 30th. 2nd and 3rd Trimester will be sent by the site and we will give full instructions on how to do that at that time.  Any report cards that need to be changed after 10/30 would be at the site level.  Admin and secretaries will receive training on how to run report cards in case they need to create an individual report after report cards are sent home after October 30th.  Please see the timeline below:

-The District will send an email on 10/22 letting parents know that the report card will be sent on 10/30.  Please click here to view the message that will be sent on 10/22 and then scroll down on this document to see the message sent on 10/30. These guides will be included in the messaging:

RCSD Report Card Information

Información de la Tarjeta de Calificaciones de RCSD-Otus

-Grades completed by 10/27 at 11:59 pm

-Every school site will get a shared folder where they can view PDF of the reports.  Those reports will be uploaded into the shared folder by 10am on 10/28.  The files will be organized by site, and then by grade level.

-Any updates need to be done by the teacher by noon on 10/29.  We know this is a quick turnaround but there is no way to space it out more with grades being completed on 10/27 at 11:59 and then us needing to run any updates the afternoon of 10/29.

-District will run the reports the afternoon of 10/29

-Email to parents on 10/30

If there are grade levels at elementary schools that would like a report card printed for parents that is a site decision. If report cards are printed, your principal will give you more details regarding who is printing them for your site and how they will be distributed to students.

Below are samples of what will be sent to parents. On the report card PDF summative scores will always show first, then participation grades for elementary and learning behaviors for middle schools.

A reminder that if you need any help with report cards we will be presenting during the optional Monday PD on 10/19 and 10/26 or you can watch the video from last week’s PD.

If you have any questions about the timeline above or anything regarding report cards please ask your principal.

TK, K-5, and Elementary PE
Please review the guide below for the details needed on how to enter grades for TK, K-5, and Elementary PE.  Elementary PE teachers will enter the PE participation grade.  The guide includes step-by-step instructions and also has video tutorials at the end that explains this process.

Grades will show to parents and students as soon as they are entered.

Updates in Otus Lessons from Last Week

There is now a preview button for lessons:

The status of Seen has been added so you can tell if a student has seen the lesson but has not completed it yet:

Elementary- Otus Advanced Assessments and Rubrics

Continue to find any newly created district assessments (Advanced Assessments and Rubrics) in your “Shared With Me” folder in Otus.  Please continue to give feedback on the assessment and rubrics in this form.

K/1 Foundational Skills Assessments & Rubrics

The rubrics for Kindergarten and 1st-grade foundational skills are set up in OTUS.  Kindergarten has 3 rubrics to use (phonological awareness, phonics and fluency).  1st grade has 2 (phonics and fluency).  Utilizing these rubrics allows us to pull this data at the district level and no longer requires you to submit this data via google form.  This is a CELEBRATION!  Don’t forget: these “grades” are due by 10/27 (along with all other grades).

  • Video to help you navigate the rubrics within OTUS

  • Updated assessment calendar reflecting the change in dates for the administration window.

  • Resource document

Reach out to Julie Murdaugh with any questions.

Reminders and Monday PD

Student Placement after November 4th

Previously the district communicated that schedules for students would come out next week, 10/19 & 10/23. Following decisions made at tonight’s Board meeting, in his message to families tomorrow, Derk will let families know that schedules will not come out until the week of October 26. During that week, the Technology department will be emailing families their schedules. Once we have more details on the exact date, we will let everyone know with a timeline of expectations for all schools and departments.

Closed Captioning in Zoom
Zoom now offers closed captioning!  Please review the guide below on how to go into your settings to set it up and how to show students or parents that need or would like to use closed captioning how to use it.

Tommy Apostolos Fund Nomination Form

We need your help! Teachers and staff, it is time to nominate any Kindergarten through 5th-grade child you feel would benefit from the Tommy Apostolos Shopping experience. Nominate any underprivileged, low income, or struggling child you feel needs that boost of self-esteem.

PLEASE CHECK ADDRESSES CAREFULLY. These are used to send applications to the families. The nomination deadline is Monday, October 19th. Late nominations will only be accepted if space is available.

THESE REFERRALS ARE CONFIDENTIAL. PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS WITH FAMILIES OR STUDENTS! Invitations are sent directly to the families.

Due to COVID, this year our shopping will be a bit different.  The applications going to nominees are very detailed.  Volunteers will be given a child’s application to make selections for that child. Final decisions on child involvement are being determined now. However, we will still be able to help hundreds of families have a better holiday.

If you would like to help, please sign up online at TommyAFund.com to shop at Kohl’s on Saturday, December 5th or 12th, starting at 6:00 a.m. and going throughout the day. More details will be available by November 1, 2020.

If you have any questions about the nomination process, feel free to contact Tommyafund@gmail.com

Thank you,

The Tommy Apostolos Fund
