Message from Jamey Schrey #LearningGains There has been much talk around the state and country around children’s “learning loss” during the pandemic. Every time I hear this, I cringe. Most educators know that starting from a deficit model is detrimental to a child and makes for a poor mental image. Plus, and I know I am not saying anything we have not all thought about, but...Ummm...we were, and still are, in a pandemic.   So “learning loss” is not something we say at the district level because that is not how we sum up the year. The only time we may say it is connected with a state or federal grant because the money is tied to this kind of language. How about if we all just talk about the learning gains of our students during the 2020-2021 school year? And, let’s be sure to include academics, behavioral, and social-emotional improvements in the conversation. As a principal, I always tried to be a pirate. What I mean by that is that I spent my classroom walks on treasure hunts. When I

Report Card Info All:  There will be optional report card training PD on May 10th from 2:30pm-4:00pm if you would like a refresher on report cards.  The process is the same as it was for 1st and 2nd trimesters.  We will have guides and more information as we get closer.  Elementary School:  The highest level, Target, will switch to the word Proficient starting on May 10th.  We know some teachers would like a later date than this, but we have to balance changing the level for 3rd trimester as late as possible, while also taking into account that different sites are running report cards at different times.  The date to run report cards is a site decision.  Your principal will be getting you additional information about dates for your site. Middle School:  It is up to sites on when they want to run a preview report.  Grades are due by 11:59pm on 5/25.  Email will go out to families on 5/27. SB98- Please Do Not Delete Information Out of Otus SB98 requires school districts to document instructional time during a distance learning model. All students were in a distance learning model from March 2020-November 4th and our Champions students continued in distance learning after November 4th.  Annually auditors are required to review district information to ensure compliance with laws and mandates. This year the auditors will be looking closely at the requirements around distance learning. The state created this template for teachers to fill out for each student for each week of instruction (you do not need to do anything with this template, we are just showing what the alternative was). The district felt this template was too cumbersome for teachers and we believed the use of Otus since the start of this school year and also Zoom reports could help meet the requirements stated in SB98. With that said, all items in Otus should remain in Otus.  Teachers should not delete any Cla
